"Volunteering Opportunities with The Philosopher"

White house on hill

Dear Friends of The Philosopher,

As you probably know, The Philosopher is run entirely by volunteers. We are looking for people to join our team in 2025 to help us develop and expand some of the things that we do. We believe that working for The Philosopher is an exciting and rewarding thing to do and we hope that you will consider joining us. Here are the positions that we are looking to fill:

1) Transcription Volunteer

We run close to 50 events per year and we try to transcribe as many of these events as we can to publish online and in our print issues. We are looking for people to help us with this transcription work. Even if you are only able to transcribe one event recording, that would be extremely useful for us. If you can do more than one, so much the better! Typically, we have found that using technology to do this leaves us with numerous grammatical and spelling errors that the editorial team then need to spend a long time working through. We are looking for clean transcripts, with full sentences, good spelling and grammar - in other words, transcripts that are ready to be handed over to the editors to create the final version.

If you may be interested in this role or would like to find out more, please email us at thephilosopher1923@gmail.com with the subject line "Transcription" by Jan 15th.

2) Manager of our YouTube channel

Our YouTube channel currently has almost 7,000 subscribers and our videos have been watched almost 250,000 times. We are looking for someone to:

  • Edit and upload the video recordings from our events series

  • Create playlists, produce short clips from the events to accompany the full-length videos, and find other innovative ways to develop the channel (e.g. working with other YouTube channels providing philosophy content)

The ideal person for this role will already have: some knowledge of how YouTube channels work; knowledge of how SEO works in order to ensure that the videos reach as many people as possible; and a passion for philosophy (as the role will involve watching many of the videos!).

If you may be interested in this role or would like to find out more, please email us at thephilosopher1923@gmail.com with the subject line "YouTube Manager" by Jan 15th. Please provide a brief biographical statement, your philosophical background and interests, as well as any relevant experience related to this role (max 300 words).

3) Events Assistant Our events are among the most popular things we do, with people from all over the world tuning in week in, week out. We are looking for someone who can help the events team with many of the administrative roles that are involved:

  • Creating the Zoom link and ticketing page for each event

  • Creating the opening slide and promotional materials for each event

  • Generating events attendance reports from each event

  • Meeting with the Events team on a regular basis

If you may be interested in this role or would like to find out more, please email us at

thephilosopher1923@gmail.com with the subject line "Events Assistant" by Jan 15th. Please provide a brief biographical statement, your philosophical background and interests, as well as any relevant experience related to this role (max 300 words).

4) Groups/Classes Assistant

This role is the similar to the "Events Assistant" above, except that it is related to our developing program of groups and classes. We are looking for someone who can help the groups/classes team with many of the administrative roles that are involved:

  • Creating the Zoom link and ticketing page for each class/group

  • Supporting the facilitators of the groups

  • Liaising with group attendees

  • Meeting with the Groups/Classes team on a regular basis

If you may be interested in this role or would like to find out more, please email us at

thephilosopher1923@gmail.com with the subject line "Groups/Classes Assistant" by Jan 15th. Please provide a brief biographical statement, your philosophical background and interests, as well as any relevant experience related to this role (max 300 words).

5) Social Media Assistants

We currently have a Twitter account, an Instagram account, and a reddit account (which is currently very underused!). We are looking for people to help us run these accounts (either all of them or just one of them depending on your knowledge of each platform, time available etc.) and develop them in new and innovative ways. The ideal candidate will already have extensive knowledge of Twitter and/or Instagram and/or reddit. Furthermore, they will understand enough about how social media works to help us develop our current channels, and maybe branch out into new social media platforms.

If you may be interested in this role or would like to find out more, please email us at thephilosopher1923@gmail.com with the subject line "Social Media Assistant" by Jan 15th. Please provide a brief biographical statement, your philosophical background and interests, as well as any relevant experience related to this role (max 300 words).

6) Fundraising Manager

If you know anything about grant writing or fundraising and would like to oversee this side of our operation, we would love to hear from you.

Please email us at thephilosopher1923@gmail.com with the subject line "Fundraising Manager" by Jan 15th. Please provide a brief biographical statement, your philosophical background and interests, as well as any relevant experience related to this role (max 300 words).

We hope that one of these roles looks appealing. We will be extremely grateful for any help you can offer and we will do our best to show our appreciation in whatever ways we can.
